I read a tweet recently that really stuck in my head. It's hard for 140 characters to do that...but this gal I've never met said "My world-view is shrinking...it's time to leave America again."
I've spent much of the summer consumed in my work...and although it is good work and work in which I seek to honor the Lord and bring glory to His name, it sometimes causes me to get wrapped up in my own world. I'm working on that, asking the Lord constantly to refine that part of me that is too easily distracted and wrapped up in my own desires.
And I've been asking him to help me remember that outside of MY world there is a WHOLE world of people who are suffering. I know that there are people here in my own city who lack food and shelter and clothing, and I have friends who are suffering from lack of work, lack of rain for their farms, lack of feed for their cattle...it goes on and on.
And, I know that there is an entire continent that is suffering from drought and malnourishment so severe that it is simply too foreign a thought for me to fully grasp and comprehend. This is particularly heavy on my heart, as Kenya is affected...and since it is, so are the precious kids I met in December and my sweet Compassion kid, Duncan.
I don't have solutions to all these issues. But I don't want to become so calloused and self-involved that I forget my calling to, at the very least, PRAY and possibly give more or serve these who are suffering. I write a lot about ways to help orphans, because that is a burden on my heart. I hope I never make any readers (the five of you!) feel bad or guilty or anything other than encouraged and possibly inspired.
I could rattle off a VERY lengthy list of organizations and blogs that offer much more information and inspiration than I'm able to...but below are just two. And, I would just ask that you join me in praying for God to provide and for Him to make ways for His glory to be known in Africa and in America, because worse than the physical hunger that is gripping our world, is the need for salvation.
THIS post offers a way to help with 100% of proceeds forwarded to NGOs that are able to help East African nations.
AMAZIMA MINISTRIES A young lady that has simply followed God's leading in her life and is making an enormous difference in the lives of an entire community in Uganda. Read her blog HERE. Beware, though...it is challenging stuff and makes me cry everytime I read it.
Thanks :)
